The San Giovanni Baptistry is the oldest building in the square and was believed to originally be a pagan temple, later converted to Christian use. The current building was reconstructed mid 11th century. The original building was built around the 4th and 5th centuries.
The building is octagon in shape, and the three bronze doors are important because they represent different scenes from the Bible ( the life of St. John the Baptist, and stories from the Old and New Testament).
Inside the Baptistry, the dome biblical scenes are in mosaics (Giant figure of Christ, Choirs of Angels, Stories of Mary and Christ, Stories of John the Baptist).
