Alleyway in Orvieto.

On Monday morning, before the 8:00 a.m. "go to work" traffic began we said goodbye to the Camollia B&B in Siena and started on our way to Collevalenza in the Umbrian Hills. Umbria a wine region, east of Tuscany, is filled with churches, castles, hilltop towns surrounded by ancient city walls, and acres and acres of vineyards and sunflowers. The term "hills" look more like mountains to this small town Southerner.
"Margaret" did a wonderful job (when we listened) in getting us to Orvieta, a small but beautiful hilltop town of about 25,000. We visited the Duomo di Orvieta where the first cornerstone was laid in 1290. The Cathedral, like Florence and Siena, is Gothic in style with white and black marble in horizontal stripes. As in the other churches and cathedrals that we have visited, this one is filled with statues and wonderful painting on both the walls and ceilings.

This is absolutely beautiful. I can't even imagine getting to be there and see it with my own eyes.
