The painting in the dome of The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) is shown at the right. The painting was done between 1572 - 1579 and is in minute detail depicting the Last Judgment.
The first stone of the Cathedral was laid in September, 1296 and is the result of 170 years of work. The Cathedral is vast, and at the time it was completed, was the largest in Europe.
